It's episode 25 of DevOps Decrypted – and we're talking about some big news in DevOps. It was recently revealed that a backdoor had been intentionally planted in XZ Utils, an open-source data compression utility available on almost all installations of Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.
We talk about the ramifications and ask, surely things would be better if they weren't open source? We'll let Rasmus stew on that one for a bit… The conversation leads us to the importance of observability and alerts, and we circle back to a past episode about SBOMs. We wrap up with some events on our calendar, including Team 24 – and as always, we're eager to hear your feedback.

Money, money, money…
In this episode, we're talking about how we've enabled FinOps at Adaptavist with CloudZero as a way to highlight anomalous spending through simple chatbots and give teams a sense of cost ownership.
We've got Chalky on as our special guest, talking to Rasmus, Matt and Laura about the inevitability of overprovisioning at the start of a new venture, controlling Kubernetes through Crossplane – and the concept of efficient scaling.
There's a lot to unpack – but while it's all about money, the heart of the matter comes down to linking people and process, through FinOps.

DevOps Decrypted: Ep.23 - The Evolution and Devolution of AI
Friday Feb 23, 2024
Friday Feb 23, 2024
We're back – still riding high after our last episode with Gene Kim, whose words are still echoing in our minds as we talk about our upcoming business transformation ebook, hackathons, and, of course… AI.
Once again, artificial intelligence dominates the news, as OpenAI launches Sora – and deepfakes make for headlines we never thought we'd read. We discuss the ethical ramifications of AI leading to job cuts and whether DevOps roles are on the line.
We also cover cloud repatriation, ongoing big tech layoffs, and AWS's latest move around IPs. And we all learned a new favourite word – it was 2023's word of the year, no less!
This was a really fascinating discussion, and it’s already spawned a whole bunch of new launchpads for future episodes. Stay tuned for more, and please give us your feedback on the show at devopsdecrypted@adaptivist.com

In this very special episode of DevOps Decrypted, we are joined by none other than Gene Kim – the bestselling author of The Phoenix Project, The DevOps Cookbook and The Unicorn Project.
It's a really great chat where Gene talks to us about his latest book, Wiring the Winning Organization. With our very own Laura, Rasmus, Jobin, Matt – and CIO Neal, join us in this fascinating discussion about slowing down to speed up, the limits of limitless communication, and the “social wiring” of companies that operate at the highest levels.
There was so much to discuss that we’re just going to have to invite Gene back to talk more!

DevOps Decrypted: Ep. 21 - Platform Engineering: The performance stage
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
Welcome back to another episode of DevOps Decrypted, where we unpack the events of KubeCon and BackstageCon. Host Laura and our resident DevOps Decrypted gang (Jobin, Rasmus and Jon) are joined by Mike Maheu – GM and Co-Founder of Venue.sh, part of the Adaptavist Group.
And this episode arrives just in time to prove some of our predictions… Last year, we highlighted platform engineering as one of our picks for "the next big thing", and it looks like we're about to see it come of age. Mike and the team talk about Venue.sh, the difference between DevOps and platform engineering, and how together they can enhance experiences for everyone.

DevOps Decrypted: Ep. 20 - The Magic of Metrics with Umano
Friday Oct 06, 2023
Friday Oct 06, 2023
Welcome to episode 20 of DevOps Decrypted, a milestone achievement for our podcast! Milestones like this allow us to reflect on everything we've achieved, what we could improve, and how to shape our future – through the magic of metrics.
So it was probably good that we talked to our guest, Chris Boys from Umano, on this episode. Umano is a platform dedicated to understanding the human side of team performance metrics, and Chris tells us all there is to know about it.
Jobin tells us about DevOpsDays in London, where Adaptavist will have a booth and a speaker taking the stage as Laura and Rasmus steer the chat around meaningful measurements and behavioural change in teams.

DevOps Decrypted: Ep. 19 - The Open Source Drama Broadcast
Friday Sep 01, 2023
Friday Sep 01, 2023
It looks like Rasmus has gone rogue in this episode… He’s kicked Laura out as host and commandeered the DevOps Decrypted podcast to further his own agenda – ranting about open-source drama! We're kidding about Laura, she’s just taken a break for this episode. But we're certainly not kidding about the open-source drama; it's actually a huge topic that could have far-reaching consequences for devs and providers globally. Of course, we're referring to HashiCorp's decision to move Terraform to the business source licence, or BSL. Jon, Jobin and Rasmus discuss what this all means, how it reminds them of the Jenkins debacle, and what impact it could have on Adaptavist and the dev community at large.

Welcome back to another episode of DevOps Decrypted! In this episode, Laura, Jobin, Rasmus and Jon are joined by special guest Sandesh Kumar – an Engineering Manager at Adaptavist Group. Sandesh tells us about how his team is using AI in quality engineering and testing and why it's not the existential threat to jobs that everyone's making it out to be. But the big story on the agenda is Adaptacon 2023, our internal, global conference. Jon explains the challenges of organising an event like this and its benefits – even when the talks appear to have nothing to do with our business.

Is there a war against third-party app developers? Well, it sure might feel like it if you’ve been following the Reddit fiasco. But it’s not an isolated incident, and it could be down to how AIs are mining data… In this episode, Jon, Jobin, Laura and Rasmus talk about how third-party applications are handled by companies like Reddit, Stack Overflow – and Atlassian.
The team also dives into the “slackening” of Slack and how Discord is starting to eat into Slack’s customer base. And finally, the conversation turns as Jon and Jobin start dropping SBOMs all over the place (we promise there's no swearing!), exploring the importance of pinpointing supply chain vulnerabilities.

DevOps Decrypted: Ep. 16 - A stitch in time
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Welcome again to DevOps Decrypted – where we're unpacking Amazon's seemingly shocking decision to ditch serverless for their Prime Video product. Does this move mean serverless is dead? Join Laura, Jobin, Jon and Rasmus, along with our special guest Erko Knoll from Stitch It, as we discuss the architecture agenda and how some groups use Amazon’s decision to push their own narratives.
We discuss the benefits and limitations of a serverless architecture and why it probably won’t go anywhere soon. We also get to hear all about Stitch It – a code-first cross-platform integration tool, and how it can be used to navigate and mitigate the limitations of serverless environments.
